To celebrate the Lunar New Year, represented artist Jan Willem has created the new fine art giclée print ‘Year of the Ox - Sugawara no Michizane'.
The imagery depicts the well respected poet Sugawara no Michizane (August 1, 845 – March 26, 903) riding an ox. The story goes that when Michizane died, an ox had carried his remains to his final resting place. While on its way, the ox suddenly stopped at a certain spot, which was interpreted as a sign that Michizane wished to be buried at that particular location. Sugawara no Michizane is buried in the city of Dazaifu, where the shinto shrine Dazaifu Tenmangū is built over his grave.
