‘Chôjun’ is a homage to Jan Willem’s favourite woodblock print ‘Rori Hakuchô Chôjun’ by the great master of ukiyo-e, Utagawa Kuniyoshi.

The 108 Heroes of the Suikoden Rori Hakuchô Chôjun is one of the 108 Heroes of the Suikoden from Kuniyoshi’s notable eponymous series of prints. The tale of the 108 Heroes of the Suikoden is based on the 14th century Chinese novel ‘Suikoden’ (Chinese: ‘Shuihu Zhuan’), which was introduced to the Western world under the title ‘The Water Margin’. The novel tells the story about a gang of rebellious outlaws fighting injustice & protecting the oppressed.

‘Chôjun’ ‘Chôjun’ shows a scene where Rori Hakuchô Chôjun is breaking through the Yongjin water gate in the battle of the city of Hangzhou. While continuing his quest to defeat the hero’s archenemy and rebel leader Fang La, Rori Hakuchô Chôjun got caught by Fang La’s son Fang Tianding. Soon after Fang Tianding spotted Rori Hakuchô Chôjun, the enemy orders his archers to rain arrows towards the hero. ‘Chôjun’ depicts Rori Hakuchô Chôjun’s dramatic last moments as he would eventually perish from his arrow wounds.
